Lou Bondì comments (The Sunday Times, July 11) that in a democracy, citizens' wishes are expressed in Parliament through the members elected and the party they belong to.

He continues to say that parties should not enact what is not spelt out in their manifesto before the election, as this would not be democratic.

On January 29, 2008, Parliament unanimously imposed the Lisbon Treaty upon people after a two-hour ritual of a discussion, without any mandate from the voters, and practically no public discussion on such a vital issue.

This is not only undemocratic but downright illegitimate.
