The police, or any other entity, have no equipment to calculate noise decibel levels and Malta has no law to regulate noise levels, Home Affairs Minister Michael Farrugia told Godfrey Farrugia in reply to a parliamentary question on Monday.

Dr Farrugia complained about loud music from an open-air disco, causing inconvenience to people living in the area of Zebbuġ, Rabat, Siġġiewi and Attard.

The minister said, however, that the police always acted over complaints and arraigned people causing inconvenience, on the basis of evidence.

Environment Minister Jose' Herrera said he had appointed a commission to study the issue of noise pollution and propose a legislative framework.

The commission is working in association with the Environment Authority and is expected to present a draft in the coming weeks.
