(Adds Opposition spokesman's reaction)

The Customs Department has denied contraband of diesel or fuel by the Falzon Group.

Earlier this week, Opposition environment spokesman Leo Brincat asked the government in Parliament to say how many times the Falzon Group had been caught with smuggled diesel and fuel in the past four years and what steps had been taken by the authorities.

Customs said this afternoon that, in the past years, it had carried out intense enforcement work against diesel and fuel contraband and it also took the necessary steps whenever it found this to have taken place.

In a statement this evening, Mr Brincat said that he had presented two clear parliamentary questions and, by right, he expected the minister to answer him in Parliament and not use the Customs Department to issue a statement.
