The Chinese authorities informed the Maltese Government that co-operation in adoption matters with Malta or other countries is not being considered at this stage.

Giving a breakdown on adopted processes Malta had with 12 countries, in reply to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Robert Cutajar, Family Minister Michael Farrugia said international adoptions by Maltese adoptive parents from Albania are Slovakia were open, while locally-accredited agencies could directly the Brazilian authorities.

Seven adoption applications were pending with the Indian authorities.

International adoptions of Russian children had not been halted.

Adoptions from the United States and Ghana were not possible because of discrepancies with the requirements of the Hague Convention, while Cambodia was not allowing international adoptions.

Health issues, the minister said, featured in adoptions from Bulgaria and Kosovo.  The Maltese government’s request from the former about medical tests’ results was still pending and there were very few Kosovar children who could be adopted and these had very serious health problems.

Locally-accredited adoption agencies, Dr Farrugia said, would be informed by the Maltese authorities about adoptions from Chile.
