The Nationalist Party will not be taking any action against MP Francis Zammit Dimech until the court pronounces its judgment on the Seabank Hotel incident, Opposition leader Simon Busuttil said yesterday.

The former minister is facing charges relating to a tragic accident in 2012 at the Seabank Hotel, in which a 27-year-old man died. Charges were filed in court only last month, listing all parties that could have been involved.

Dr Zammit Dimech was a non-executive director of the hotel and as such he was not involved in what happened in any manner, Dr Busuttil said in a statement.

There was no role of responsibility within the party from which to dismiss him, the Opposition leader added.

“The incident was not even remotely connected with Dr Zammit Dimech’s parliamentary and political duties or even with his past ministerial duties, and therefore dismissal from the party is not warranted”, Dr Busuttil said, pointing out Dr Zammit Dimech did not occupy an executive role in government.

Dismissal is not warranted

He said that he was standing “four-square” behind Dr Zammit Dimech and had the full backing of the parliamentary group, adding that he wanted to make his position public in full transparency.
