An Egyptian national being detained at the police headquarters was jailed for nine months after he admitted to escaping from a detention centre.

Mohamed Younes Mohamed Ali admitted to escaping from the detention centre on January 11. Magistrate Doreen Clarke heard that Mr Ali had been given a one-year jail term suspended for three months in 2007 by Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona on similar charges.

Defence lawyer Mark Busuttil told the court his client had not committed a “hardcore crime” and, thus, did not deserve to be imprisoned. After taking this into consideration, the magistrate said that Mr Ali has to learn that orders are orders and they should be obeyed.Police Inspector Edel Mary Camilleri prosecuted.
