The Malta Environment & Planning Authority (MEPA) has signed an agreement with a number of local councils to fully or partially fund 13 projects that ultimately help ‘create better places to live in.’ The sum of over €500,000 is being made available to these Local Councils through the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF) scheme which is operated by the Authority.

The urban improvement projects that are being funded include the upgrading of a playing field and the embellishment of a public garden in San Gwann, new energy-saving and anti-pollution street lighting in Zebbug and Victoria in Gozo and paving works around a number of streets in Fgura, Birkirkara, Msida, Rabat and Gzira.

MEPA said the UIF committee is working on revising and improving the policy framework with the aim to ensure that the Urban Improvement Fund (UIF) keeps achieving high quality results through the promotion of more holistic and sustainable projects.

Set up in October 2006, the fund has accumulated €7.4million. The UIF Committee has so far approved148 projects worth over €4.7 million
