The government is proposing night-time and afternoon waste collection in Valletta, and heavier fines for those who take out their litter too early.

Parliamentary Secretary Deo Debattista has launched a consultation document which proposes that waste in Valletta will be collected by vehicles of set dimensions between midnight and 3am and between 3pm and 5pm every day, including Sundays and public holidays.

Residents and business owners will be obliged not to take out waste more than half an hour before the proposed times. Those caught taking out waste outside the allocated time slots will be subjected to a €200 fine on first offence. This can be upped to €500 on second offence, and to €1,000 on third or any further offence.

Those caught collecting waste from Valletta using vehicles which do not respect the stipulated dimensions can be fined up to €2,000.

“Valletta has experienced a social, cultural, and economic boom, and while this must be celebrated, we must also address its repercussions. One of these, is excessive domestic and commercial waste”, Dr Debattista noted.

The consultation ends on January 15.
