A 31-year-old Nigerian woman was given a one-year jail term suspended for two years after she admitted in court to trying to leave Malta with a fake passport early this morning.

Gloria Ilaho sat in the dock with her two small sons - one of them a toddler who sat on her lap.

She admitted to trying to leave Malta, to Italy, with a fake passport listing the name Kate Osawaru. She was arrested at the airport's check-in desk as she tried to make use of the document.

Police Inspector Mario Haber prosecuted.
Lawyer Benjamin Valenzia represented the woman.
