Nigerian national Agboola Remilekun Komorudeen, 45, has been charged with importing heroin and cocaine into Malta by allegedly ingesting drug-filled capsules.

The man, who resides in The Netherlands, pleaded not guilty to importing heroin and cocaine, the possession with the intent to sell and conspiring to traffic in the substances.

Earlier the police said that together with the Customs Enforcement Unit they embarked on their investigations late on Friday at Malta International Airport, after it was established that a Nigerian was likely to be importing drugs to Malta.

Passengers arriving in Malta on a flight from Brussels, including the Nigerian, were searched but the search was negative. The Nigerian was taken to hospital for an x-ray and was found to have several capsules with drugs in his stomach.

Police Inspector Pierre Grech, prosecting, told Magistrate Silvio Meli that Mr Komorudeen was still being held at Mater Dei Hospital, under medical supervision, as he still had to pass about 20 capsules even though he already excreted some.
