Nigerian immigrant Tony Ige Michael, 23, was remanded in custody today after an incident which occurred yesterday at the open centre in Hal Far.

Mr Michael pleaded not guilty in court to assaulting PC Saviour Chircop and Mario Gauci, a public officer, disobeying police orders and disturbing public order.

Police inspector Priscilla Caruana told the court that the incident occurred when Mr Michael had lined up to receive social benefits when he was due to receive his allowance later this month.

Legal aid Anthony Cutajar said the incident was being blown out of proportion.
