Three NGOs have been allocated €68,655, in overseas development aid funds that were left over from the government's 2008 ODA budget.

SOS Malta was given €21,480 to set up a rain-water harvesting system in Ethiopia, the Christian Doctrine Society benefited from €21,250 to set up a computer laboratory within the already existing Preca Vocational Training School in Kenya, and Education Aid was allotted €25,925 to promote socio-economic development by educating small businesses in Benin.

Foreign Minister Tonio Borg, who made the presentation of funds this morning, explained that these three NGOs were amongst the 23 that applied for the €333,000 in the 2009 ODA budget. The government decided to make use of the leftover funds from 2008 and picked these three projects. He stressed that this did not prejudice the other NGOs as the 2009 funds would be divided in a manner to ensure that eligible projects benefited from this type of aid.

He added that the amounts given to the three NGOs did not cover the whole costs of the individual projects and their expenditure would be monitored.
