A Migrant Skills Register has been set up to list the skills of African migrants in Malta and thus help them find employment.

The project is being handled by the African Media Association Malta with financial assistance by the Small Initiatives Support Scheme of the Malta Council for the Voluntary sector.

“We have created a skills register which interviews and identifies migrants and records their skills with the intention of creating a useful resource for potential employers needing those skills, and to give the migrants an opportunity to work,” the people behind the project said on their website http://theskilledmigrant.com/

“Many immigrants are subjected to discrimination and underpayment by employers who are simply not aware of the skills of their workers. Those who have their asylum applications rejected are allowed to remain in Malta for humanitarian reasons but are excluded from the job market and cannot register with the ETC (Jobs Plus). We believe that with the help of this platform many will have their skills registered and will get a better chance to get jobs according to their skills,” they added.

The NGO is also providing workshops / personal development training for migrants to aid and nurture their skills.

Employers can also register their requirements.
