The NGO currently back in the media after rescuing 64 migrants off Libya is concerned that the looming European Parliament elections mean its situation will be politicised.

"The European Union has to find a solution to how sea rescue can be continued responsibly and in compliance with international law, regardless of the political mood in individual member states.

"One of the solutions could be to acknowledge the work of aid organizations and neither defame nor hinder their work," says Gorden Isler, spokesman for Sea-Eye.

Some 250 organisation sent an open letter to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel on April 3, when Sea Eye's German ship, Alan Kurdi, rescued 64 off Libya.

The ship, which has 17 crew, is currently bouond for Lampedusa, having been refused entry into Libya and Malta, although the Italians have also said that its ports are closed.

The 64 people, including 12 women, one child and one baby, were rescued in international waters off Libya from a rubber boat.

"The rubber boat would not have been able to reach a safe place out of its own force, so we decided to evacuate." says Jan Ribbeck, Head of Operation for Sea-Eye e.V.

The NGO said that another rubber boat with 50 persons, has been missing since Monday.

No one could be reached in Tripoli via phone, the NGO said.

"The Libyan coast guard did not comply with its responsibility to coordinate this distress case according to the maritime law provisions."Some politicians like to describe the aid organizations as the ones not cooperating with authorities. It is fact however, that no one could be reach in Tripoli through one of the eight phone numbers and that emails have not been answered either. How is one supposed to cooperate with someone who is not communicating?" Mr Isler said.
