THE NEW Seat Toledo will be a hatchback built slightly larger than the old saloon, but with greater fuel economy courtesy of the latest engine technology.

Initial details show a car that will share its chassis and running gear with the forthcoming Skoda Rapid, including the excellent 1.2- and 1.4-litre petrol TSI engines.

At 4.48 metres long it’s 40mm longer than the old Toledo, released in 2004. The wheelbase, however, is 80mm longer than that of the old car and is designed to give both better driving characteristics and more interior space.

Despite the hatchback boot the saloon pretence is maintained in design, with the omission of a rear windscreen wiper. Saloons are generally regarded with more prestige and Seat is trying to maintain that image.

The petrol engines, which will have outputs of between 74bhp and 120bhp and CO2 emissions as low as 116g/km, will be joined by two 1.6-litre TDI diesels. Initially an Ecomotive 104bhp version will emit a fleet-friendly 104g/km, but later in 2013 a second, 89bhp version will join the range. No figures are yet available for its environmental performance.

According to Seat’s release, the standard safety package for all Toledos will include six airbags, central locking, split-folding rear seats and front electric windows. Reference and Style versions will be offered with more comfort and technological extras.

An on-sale date is yet to be finalised.
