An addition to the railway tunnel leading out of Valletta is being removed because of the City Gate project.

The work will be followed by the demolition of the shops in Freedom Square. The debris will be disposed of down a chute to the ditch below, reducing inconvenience for people in the City.

The newest part of the tunnel – just over one metre long – was added after World War I. The original part, including the bridge built in the 1880s, will be preserved, Chris Paris, CEO of the Grand Harbour Regeneration Corporation said.

The works are being carried out in the weekend to reduce the inconvenience to drivers and pedestrians, Mr Paris added.
