Newcastle United ended Chelsea's run of six successive wins in all competitions when they scored an upset 2-0 victory over Jose Mourinho's men in the Premier League at St James' Park.

Newcastle won with second-half goals from Frenchmen Yoan Gouffran, who scored with a stooping header from a Yohan Cabaye free kick after 68 minutes, and Loic Remy who stabbed in off the inside of the post in the 89th minute.

Chelsea had their chances with Eden Hazard going close before Newcastle's second, but Mourinho could not hide his disappointment after the final whistle.

"I did not like my team today," he told BT Sport.

"We had a couple of chances to equalise but they were more in the game than us, fought more than us and they were much more committed than us, so they were the best team on the pitch.

"We were not fast, intense and aggressive enough with the ball and we let the game go ... at half time I was smelling this was the way the game could go. I did not like my team today, I am disappointed."

Newcastle coach Alan Pardew had seen his team only win once at home in the league this season and was delighted by the much needed victory after their 2-1 defeat by Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear derby last weekend.

"The free kick changed the game and got us a reward," he said.

"But I have been saying for the last three or four games we have been playing well and we proved it today."

There was little to choose between the teams in a drab first half in the rain but Newcastle were the brighter side after the break and thoroughly deserved to take all three points.

Chelsea would have gone top of the table with a win, but Arsenal can now extend their lead to five points if they beat Liverpool at the Emirates later
