New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert says he has got the bulk of his starting side decided for their World Cup opener against Slovakia on June 15 and will use the training match against Chile to give his fringe players some game time.

The All Whites, who have now arrived in South Africa, will take on the South Americans in Nelspruit on Wednesday in a game played over three 30 minute periods.

For experienced defenders Ivan Vicelich and Ben Sigmund, who played in the warm-up match against Australia but have missed out to Winston Reid and Tommy Smith in the recent matches against Serbia and Slovenia, it will be the final chance to press their claims for inclusion after being instrumental in getting New Zealand to their first World Cup since 1982.

"Those two will probably play against Chile," said Herbert, who has all but "one or two" positions in his starting 11 penned in.

"It would be fair to say most players would have some involvement at some stage.

"I only wanted a training game which would have been great with no pressure and we could just have gone out done what we needed to do.

"I didn't even want it in a stadium. I just wanted it at a training ground but for some reason that hasn't happened.

"I'm not going to change tack on that (being a training exercise). We've seen over the last three games what we've wanted to see and maybe the first 30 minutes against Chile there could be a couple of players out there pressing for selection.

"We're getting close to how we want to play and who we want to play."

The side came through the 3-1 loss to Slovenia with no new injuries leaving striker Chris Killen's tight calf as the only minor concern.

A decision on whether midfielder Tim Brown rejoins the squad after surgery to repair a fractured shoulder is expected on Wednesday.
