The US Navy’s new guided missile destroyer USS Zumwalt, now undergoing sea trials, has been described as a step back to the future.

Its design looks futuristic yet the hull resembling the Confederate Navy’s ironclad Merrimack from 1862.

The design in influenced by radar stealth considerations.

The Zumwalt is named for Elmo Russell Zumwalt, Jr, the youngest man to serve as chief of naval operations.
