Carmel De Gabriele has been appointed as regulator to oversee the implementation and monitoring of the Citizenship Investment Scheme.
In the past, Mr De Gabriele served as chief electoral commissioner under former administrations, as well as director general of social and family affairs and permanent secretary in the Social Policy Ministry. Appointed for a two-year term, Mr De Gabriele replaces Godwin Grima, who retired from the public service.
Often referred to as the cash-for-passports scheme, the Citizenship Investment Scheme was controversial in European circles when it was first introduced in 2013.
