The Malta Drag Racing Association has just organised its third drag racing event of the season at the Hal Far Raceway.

In all, 125 competitors turned up for the three-day racing series as organisers reckoned it was the best ever night event held in the past few years.

Night events always provide a big attraction. Spectators attended in great numbers and a big screen was also set up during the series to help those present follow events from start to finish.

Humidity was slightly higher than usual. However, national records were broken as new marks were set.

The Top Methanol Class stole the show. John Ellul, of Elbros Racing Team, was competing against Mario Borg, of Borg Brothers Racing Team.

Both of them pushed their dragsters courageously to the limit but Borg was slightly faster in qualifying with a 5.935sec compared with Ellul's 5.985sec.

Spectators were on their feet before the final run. The noise was tremendous as the dragsters were effecting their burnouts before blasting off.

Borg eventually came out tops on his way to breaking two records - that of 60-foot and elapsed time - .891 of a second and 5.935.

These times probably qualify the Borg Brothers 350ci Top Methanol dragster as the fastest around in the motor sport racing world.

There were other impressive times and personal bests registered during the series including that of newcomer Chris Polidano on his Escort Cosworth Altered - 8.5 seconds-run without Nitrous Oxide.

Emanuel Mangion flashed his Cosworth Escort down the raceway in 8.4s in various classes. He contested four different finals. Jesmond Mallia, on his Super Street 2.2ltr with Nos, broke a class record with a 9.988-seconds run.

Another good showing came from Tommy Agius on his Volvo 12ltr diesel truck. His run was timed at 11.5 secs with an impressive terminal speed of almost 120mph. He was the fastest truck driver on the day.

In motorcycles, Chris Vella, on a Kawasaki 900cc, dashed past the finishing line in 9.4 seconds, a great elapsed time for a small-engined bike.
