A Nationalist Government will continue to ensure that the police force is equipped with the necessary technology and equipment to fight crime, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said.

He spoke during the inauguration of the new forensic laboratories at the police headquarters in Floriana.

Through an investment of over €2 million, funded by the EU, the police now have a new database of DNA and fingerprints that allows information sharing with other EU countries.

Other parts of the laboratory are dedicated to the analysis of body fluid, such as blood, and the analysis of documents such as passports.

Two sections of the new laboratory were named after PS Saviour Muscat and PC Joseph Hare who died while on duty aboard patrol boat C23 in 1984. Their relatives were present for the inauguration.
