Playwright Malcolm Galea has been around for a while. However, it wasn’t until last year’s sudden hit Porn – the Musical that he was brought into the public eye as the musical went on to be nominated for Best New Musical at the 2009 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The show received its first London run last April where it received mostly four-star reviews and was listed as Time Out Critic’s Choice along with the likes of Hair and Jerusalem.
Although Porn – The Musical is still in the very early stages of its course, Mr Galea has already set his mind on other projects and his new play, Revenance, opens tonight at the MITP in Valletta and runs for two weeks. Intended as a festival piece, Revenance crams a rich story and a feast of stylised elements into a jam-packed hour.
The story starts five centuries with a bell-maker falling to his death from a lofty steeple. However, the plot soon takes some sudden twists that keep the audience guessing right up until the very end as to what exactly it is that they are witnessing.
