A new nationwide programme across local primary state schools will start in the coming scholastic year with the aim of improving physical education both in terms of quantity and quality. This is in line with the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity policy document launched in February.

The programme will consist of merging academic subjects with physical activity, resulting in a more stimulating process of learning.

Education Officer for Physical Education, Kevin Azzopardi said that the programme is the result of a number of workshops carried out by primary physical education teachers during last scholastic year. The concept was piloted towards the end of the scholastic year at Safi Primary School and was a complete success. Children enjoyed the different approach to learning, while teachers reported a higher engagement by the students.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said that it was crucial for educators to think of new innovative ways on how to engage children. He said that schools should be a vibrant and lively centre allowing them to fulfil their potential and to keep them motivated to keep learning.

An additional 20 Physical Education teachers have been engaged for the upcoming scholastic year, with every college having at least an additional peripatetic PE teacher. The ultimate result is going to be more frequent and better Physical Education lessons.

A national BMI project across all primary and secondary schools (including independent and church) reaching a total of 46,000 pupils will complement these policies.
