A group of 95 people became police men and women today following a passing out ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi at the former Umberto Calasso School in Sta Venera.

In his address, Dr Gonzi said that no democratic state could guarantee the people’s rights without a strong police force that was prepared, disciplined and capable of fighting those who tried to taint it.

Laws were extremely important but it was the police force that had to enforce these laws to ensure order, public peace and social stability.

In their majority, the people trusted the police and it was the duty of officers to retain this trust.

The government had strengthened the force by amending legislation and equipping the police with modern equipment and infrastructure and it would continue to do so, the Prime Minister said as he congratulated the young recruits.
