Anthony Abela Medici will serve as Malta's next NGO Commissioner, the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector revealed on Wednesday.

Dr Abela Medici, a forensic expert who led the police force's forensic science lab for almost three decades, also has experience as honorary secretary of the Scout Association of Malta. He will replace Kenneth Wain, who handed in his resignation last month.

As NGO Commissioner, he will also serve as deputy chairman on the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, which will now be chaired by Għaqda Każini tal-Banda president Noel Camilleri.

Dr Camilleri was nominated to the position for a two-year term to 2020 on Tuesday.

He will lead the council in supporting local voluntary organisations working across every aspect of society through networking, training, capacity building, funding initiatives, and awareness raising.

The council, which also serves a supporting role to the NGO Commissioner, seeks to provide NGOs with a more unified and stronger voice.

Members of the council are appointed by the Education Minister every two years.

Late last year, the council prompted controversy after opting to name the Prime Minister's wife, Michelle Muscat, its volunteer of the year

The newly-elected council is made up of:

  •  Damien Attard from Right 2 Smile
  •  Doris Bingley from the National Council of Women
  •  Gertrude Buttigieg from Malta Federation of Professional Associations
  •  Noel Camilleri from Għaqda Każini tal-Banda
  •  Antoine Farrugia from Home Away from Home
  •  Robert Farrugia from Scouts Association Malta
  •  Trevor Fenech as government representative
  •  Edward Gruppetta from Red Cross Malta
  •  Michael Richard Piccinino from Kunsill Nazzjonali taż-Żgħażagħ
  •  Oliver Scicluna representing Persons with Disability
  •  Corrine Wood from Dr Klown
