A new study being launched today will examine the prevalence of hearing loss in Malta, across different age groups.

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca was the first person to take the test on Saturday morning.

OK Medical Head of Audiology Nicholas Desira explained that the aim of the study is to have more accurate statistics on the amount of people who have a hearing loss.

“Research has consistently shown that people may not know, or find it hard to accept, they have a hearing loss. So the data we have available may not accurately represent the extent of the problem,” he said.

“We thought that by going out in the community and actually testing people, we would get more accurate information, while also raising awareness and reducing the stigma of hearing loss,” he added.

Research has shown that between two and 15 per cent of the population may suffer from hearing loss. One of the primary sources of information is the National Census, with the most recent published data being that of the 2011 Census.

But this is based on questionnaires which may not give a good enough representation of the actual incidence of hearing loss.

The majority of people who have a permanent hearing loss would benefit from the use of a hearing aid. The latest models are advanced digital systems that have a lot of processing capability to reduce unwanted sounds, boost speech and reduce feedback (whistling).

The hearing aids also have advanced features such as machine learning and compatibility with mobile phones.

Mr Desira said the test will be carried out at local councils as from Monday with the first three months covering Msida, Marsa, Floriana, Qormi, Mġarr, Birżeb-buġa and Żabbar.

The study is planned to last two years and is expected to target up to four per cent of the population.

Anyone 18 years and older, living in the locality, may phone to book a hearing test, even if hearing loss is not suspected.

Residents will be contacted through the post and through other media such as Facebook prior to the testing dates. More information can also be obtained on dedicated line 2148 0300 or http://www.protectdhz.com/ .
