The History Teachers’ Association of Malta (HTA) is launching a new Maltese History textbook. The textbook, entitled From the Coming of the Knights to EU Membership, is targeted at students taking the History SEC exam.

It is the work of ten history teachers working in different sectors of Maltese education under the co-ordination of Yosanne Vella (editor). In an effort to make the textbook more attractive and to help prime the students using it, all pages are in full colour. The pages are also packed with information, exercises and ‘New History’ ingredients. The focus of the textbook is on skills and concepts, thus taking a modern approach to the teaching of History.

The launching of the book will be held during the seventh edition of the Michael A. Sant Memorial Lecture. This year’s guest speaker will be Christine Counsell, a leading History pedagogist in Europe. She is currently a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge and editor of the journal Teaching History.

During the lecture, entitled ‘What do we want students to do with historical change and continuity? Re-connecting with subjective and temporal experience’, she will be highlighting central concepts in the teaching of History and how these can be delivered to the students.

The lecture and launching will be held on October 29 at 5.45 p.m. at the National Curriculum Centre, Hamrun. Teachers and the public are cordially invited. For more information contact George Cassar (george.cassar@um.edu.mt) or Dr Vella (yosanne.vella@um.edu.mt) respectively president and vice-president of the HTA.
