The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Lieutenancy of Malta has announced that Cardinal Edwin O’Brien has just appointed Comm. Roberto Buontempo as the third Lieutenant for Malta after accepting a proposal made by the Regent and Grand Prior for Malta, Mgr Charles Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta and Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. His appointment is effective as of January 1, 2019.

Comm. Buontempo is a committed Christian, husband and father to one daughter. He has been a very active Chancellor within the Order, representing the Lieutenancy both locally and overseas. Only last November he was invited to represent the Maltese Lieutenancy at the Consulta 2018.

The Consulta is an international gathering that brings all Lieutenants and Magistral Delegates together from across the globe and culminates with a Papal audience.

A graduate in Business Administration and Management, Comm. Buontempo is a Chartered Manager and holds professional fellowships with the Chartered Management Institute, the Institute of Supply Chain Management, as well as the Royal Society of Arts.

He has occupied the post of director on a number of boards. Mgr Scicluna has also just appointed Comm. Buontempo to the position of property administrator for the Curia in Malta.

The Order’s mission is: to strengthen in its members the practices of Christian life and absolute fidelity to the Supreme Pontiff and, according to the teachings of the Church, observing as its foundation the principles of charity of which the Order is a fundamental means for assistance to the Holy Land; to sustain and aid the charitable, cultural, social works and institutions of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, particularly those of and in the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem with which the Order maintains traditional ties; to support the preservation and promulgation of the faith in those lands, interesting in this work the Catholics scattered throughout the world, united in charity by the symbol of the Order, and also all brother Christians; and to sustain the rights of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land.
