An online supermarket, maltasupermarket.com, has just been launched with the promise of generating 20 new jobs.

The website is a project of the Shopwise Development Group and was developed by Cyberspace Solutions.

The group already employs 200 people and its €350,000 investment in the website means it will have invested €8 million over the last five years.

Speaking at the launch, Finance Minister Tonio Fenech said investment was the best indicator of a country’s economy.

The number of Maltese companies and individuals exploiting the internet to develop their businesses was on the increase, he added.

Mr Fenech said last year 70 companies had benefitted from the €2.5 million e-business scheme fund that the government offered through Malta Enterprise.

More than 82 per cent of Maltese families have access to high speed internet and about half of them make use of online shopping services.
