The go-ahead granted for the 744-apartment block on Xemxija ridge has rekindled interest in the controversial construction of a road linking St Paul’s Bay to Ta’ Pennellu in Mellieħa.

Transport Malta confirmed that the road is being considered as a solution to the increasing traffic congestion on Xemxija hill that is only set to become worse with the mega project, planned for what was once the Mistra Village site.

The Mistra project is estimated to add around 1,600 cars to the choked Xemxija hill which already takes an estimated 23,000 cars a day.

The road project is, however, expected to be fiercely resisted by farmers. Mario Cardona, a member of the Manikata Rural Community, said the community would strongly oppose any project that cut through Manikata, as had also been proposed seven years ago.
