A digital x-ray unit  for the screening of migrants against tuberculosis has been set up at Lyster Barracks detention centre. Three isolation units have also been set up for migrants suffering infectious diseases who do not require admission to Mater Dei Hospital, the Health Ministry said.

The facilities were set up through a grant of €700,000 given to Malta in January by the European Refugee Fund.

The Ministry for Health in a statement said it was committed to enhancing public health initiatives to protect the health of the nation and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

It said that people coming from countries where diseases such as TB are endemic are screened to promptly identify any cases.
