Enemalta engineers can now respond to problems at 1,300 substations without having to physically go there, another step which has helped it reduce power cuts by 60 per cent.

The engineering team has been moved to a new Network Planning and Operations Control Centre in Marsa, which forms part of a €5 million investment to upgrade the control and automation systems of the national electricity distribution system.

They had completely outgrown the last control centre – but the new location offers more than just more space: an innovative automation system has been rolled out over the past two years to remotely control the substations, while a computerised surveillance system with over 700 cameras monitors the electricity distribution infrastructure – particularly useful to provide information about the physical state of equipment during emergencies or other technical difficulties.

Enemalta chairman Fredrick Azzopardi said that the company has invested over €100 million to consolidate the electricity network, and has reduced electricity supply disruptions to customers by over 60 per cent.
