The Biological Conservation Research Foundation (Bicref) said it supported the extension of the eco-contribution to plastic bags, which aimed at minimising or stopping their use.
Bicref said it would now like to see plastic bottles and containers replaced with glass or other biodegradable and non-toxic materials. The foundation said it often reported seeing a large amount of plastic materials in the sea, such as bottles or plastic bags. Many organisms, including dolphins, birds and turtles, could mistake these as food and choke on them, it said.
"Our valleys and countryside also need care and attention with respect to plastics and other forms of rubbish which is thrown there at the expense of these vulnerable habitats."
Bicref said it looked forward to seeing these eco-taxes used to improve Malta's natural environment in tangible ways.
