Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi this morning inaugurated the new maritime headquarters of the Armed Forces of Malta as well as three rigid hull inflatable boats (ribs) that were co-financed by the EU.

As he congratulated the AFM for their courage and dedication, Dr Gonzi highlighted the importance of EU membership and EU funds.

"This is another link in a chain of investment in the AFM," he said at the end of an inauguration ceremony. He said the Government was committed to keep investing in AFM equipment and training.

Dr Gonzi said Malta acquired more EU funds because it had a good track record of utilising funds to their potential. It was now important that the €1.12 billion acquired for Malta would continue to be used well.

AFM Commander Martin Xuereb said the projects inaugurated today cost €2.4 million. He added that more projects were in the pipeline including the investment in a new helicopter and a premises near the airport which would include offices, accommodation and lecture rooms.
