A new €3.5 million data centre at SmartCity would help entice IT businesses seeking to establish themselves in Malta, Investment Minister Chris Cardona said today.
The data centre has been built to the highest industry standards by BMIT Limited and could prove to be a boon for businesses reliant on being online 24 hours a day.
A data centre is a large group of networked computer servers. It is typically used to remotely store, distribute or process data.
BMIT used the data centre launch to also announce that the completion of a very high speed dedicated network offering up to 40Gbps of connectivity. The network links BMIT's data centres in Malta, Italy and Germany together.
Using multiple fibre connections throughout the network would provide businesses with "the highest level of resilience once can aim for," BMIT CEO Christian Sammut said.
Dr Cardona praised the company for its investment, saying that such improvements "raise not just the company's but also Malta's reputation and attractiveness."
