Prime Minister Joseph Muscat called for a wider discussion on gender quotas to encourage more women to enter politics.

Though quotas were only a temporary measure to ensure more women are elected to parliament, over time it will not be needed any longer, he said, citing the Labour Party as an example of success.

He underlined the need to give women more economic independence and to create the right environment to help them enter the work market.

The Prime Minister was addressing the Labour Women's section's annual general meeting.
