With the battle for the next-generation DVD format over, attention is now totally focused on Sony's Blu-ray, the winner against Toshiba's HD DVD. However, the absolute majority of consumers around the world are still enjoying their good old DVD players. The number of titles in Blu-ray is very small compared to DVD.

This is one of the reasons why consumers are still reluctant to invest in a Blu-ray DVD player. The price tag is still high, though it's bound to go down gradually. Until then, the current DVD format remains king. For those who really want high picture quality with the current DVD format there's a new model from Sony which provides just that.

Sony's new DVP NS78H DVD player is the ideal companion to an HD ready LCD or Plasma TV. i-Tech had the opportunity to use a model from Forestals, the local agents for Sony, to test the model. The DVP NS78H lives to the promise of very good up-scaled DVD quality for a 1080p LCD TV. Recent DVD releases feel home, while old releases seem to take a new lease of life.

Sony markets the models as an opportunity to see your digital photos on CD or DVD as they were meant to look on your high definition TV. When we tested the model we found out that this is very true with jpeg photos. This player really supports HD photo slideshow output so you can view your images at five times the resolution previously available - quality that makes the most of your HDTV.

Although the main output to TV is HDMI, it also offers the further choice of component or RGB SCART. It is able to play DivX, SVCD, DVD+R DL and pretty much any other blank disc format, including AVI video files which can be downloaded from the internet.

The case is slim, stylish and well laid out, a classy addition to your set-up. The remote gives all the control at the touch of a button.

Setting it up was easy, but perhaps it will take some time for novice users who have never installed such equipment with an LCD or Plasma TV.
