A Nativity Village, Bethlehem f'Għajnsielem, has been opened by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi and blessed by Gozo Bishop Mario Grech at Ta' Passi fields in Għajnsielem.

Mayor Francis Cauchi and project manager Franco Ciangura took Dr Gonzi round the live crib featuring, among others, the carpenter's house animated by Karmnu Xuereb 's family, the blacksmith, animated by Ġużi Mallia and his family, and the shepherd's cave and bakery, which was animated by Frank and Lorietta Buttigieg.

The Franciscan community, led by Br Lorry, runs the market, while villagers show their skills with lace making, pottery and other crafts.

The centre of attraction is the Nativity grotto.

The various animals milling around and actors carrying oil lamps help give the village a realistic atmosphere.

More than 80 actors are taking, part under the direction of Joanne Debrincat of the Għaqda Drammatika Għjnsielem.

The village is open daily until January 4. It is animated on weekends and public holidays.
