A Nationalist Government would repeal or completely change the Citizenship Act and not just tweak it, Oppostion leader Simon Busuttil said this afternoon.
He was addressing a news conference held in St George’s Square shortly after the amendments were approved from Committee Stage.
Dr Busuttil said when asked that donations made for people to acquire citizenship would not be refunded.
He accused the Government of steamrolling over the Opposition without even budging an inch as all amendments moved by the Opposition were defeated.
“The Government did not even budge an inch... This shows that it is not true that it works with everyone... Our amendments were intended to improve the scheme, which the Opposition will continue to oppose and vote against,” he said.
Dr Busuttil said the Government also insulted the Opposition by setting up a monitoring committee and including it in it. He did not exclude that the Opposition might refuse to form part of this committee.
He also did not exclude that the Opposition would make the names of the people acquiring citizenship public if it had access to them through this committee.
