Registration for WICT 2008, the first national ICT conference promoting research and applications of technologies and practices in the field of ICT, is now open at www.wict.eu/registration.

The event is being organised by the University of Malta's Faculty of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and will take place on November 17 and 18 at the Aula Magna, Old University building, Valletta.

WICT 2008 will be showcasing original papers dealing with both theoretical and practical aspects of ICT research. These research topics include social networks, user-adaptive systems, location-based services, cognitive networks, computer security, computer graphics, video streaming, and hardware design and verification, and computer simulation.

With the primary aim of promoting innovation, WICT is exposing current research efforts by university students, researchers and academics, enabling researchers to direct their efforts to areas of national and international relevance; students to investigate their potential research areas in line with industry requirements; and market players to see what the academic arena has to offer in terms of R&D and recruitment opportunities.

This year's event will be featuring 36 research papers as well as three high-profile speakers: Tim Regan from Microsoft Research Cambridge, who will be delivering a keynote speech on computer-mediated living; Pythagoras Papdimitriou from Sun Microsystems, who will be delivering a keynote speech on identity management; and Marjes Zammit from Google Labs who will be delivering a keynote speech on information retrieval.

The main sponsors for this event are Go, Ericsson, Microsoft, MITTS, the Ministry for Infrastructure, Transport and Communications and SmartCity Malta.
