The government is to host a national conference which will discuss the role of NGOs in the provision of healthcare.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Chris Fearne, said that while the government had a duty to provide an excellent level of healthcare to all, NGOs had an important role as well, such as advocacy and support groups.

The conference, later this year, will discuss how the NGOs can work better in the health service.

Dr Fearne made his comments during the presentation of a foetal ultrasound probe party funded by the Beating Hearts NGO.

The probe will enable doctors to investigate foetal heart problems.

Between 25 and 30 babies are born every year with heart problems.

Beating Hearts founder Katrina Aquilina said the foundation was set up in 2011 after her son was given care for his heart problems. The donation, she said, was a token of appreciation. She said the NGO intends to raise funds for a cardiac echo machine.
