A supporter of Italian soccer club SC Napoli who was shot last month during a fight between supporters of his club and rival AS Roma died overnight, a spokeswoman for Rome's Gemelli Hospital said.
Ciro Esposito, 29, was left in a critical condition after being shot in the chest outside Rome's Olympic Stadium on the night of the Coppa Italia final on May 3, won 3-1 by Napoli.
A 48-year-old Roma supporter was arrested and charged with attempted murder after the incident, which set off ugly scenes in the stadium during a match attended by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and watched by some nine million television viewers.
"Ciro is dead and in Naples, we proclaim a state of civic mourning," the mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris said in a tweet.
The incident has fed into the bitter regional rivalries between clubs and fuelled deep resentment in Naples, the biggest club in Italy's poor south.
As well as repeated incidents of racist chants against black players, Italian soccer has often seen chants aimed at Naples supporters, with rival fans calling them 'cholera-sufferers' or wishing the volcanic Mount Vesuvius to erupt over the city.
