Nadur Youngsters have been crowned Gozo champions for the second year running by virtue of their 5-1 drubbing of Qala last weekend.

This is Nadur's seventh league title in their history. The Youngsters, whose remaining match is against Xewkija Tigers on May 4, are seven points clear of nearest rivals Ghajnsielem who were unexpectedly beaten by Zebbug Rovers.

Nadur Youngsters 5
Qala St Joseph 1

This match pitted two teams occupying positions at the two extreme ends of the Division One standings. It was Qala, though, who scored first after four minutes when Joseph Grech headed past Vella.

Nadur did not lose their composure, taking just five minutes to level matters thanks to a fine Anthony Portelli goal.

The leaders kept their foot on the accelerator and a 20th-minute Edoardo do Nascimento first-timer put the champions ahead for the first time.

The score became 3-1 in the 35th minute when the referee ordered a penalty for a foul on Portelli. The same Nadur player scored from the penalty spot.

Nadur continued to play the better football after the break and it did not take them long to score again, substitute Joseph Portelli making it 4-1 in the 47th minute. Sixteen minutes from time, do Nascimento guided the ball inside Qala's net to make it a definitive 5-1.

Zebbug Rovers 1
Ghajnsielem 0

Ghajnsielem's fading title hopes were extinguished when they were surprisingly defeated by Zebbug Rovers.

Thanks to their narrow 1-0 victory, Zebbug have consolidated their third spot in the table. If they manage to defend this position in their last two matches of the campaign, the Rovers will make this season the most successful in their history.

Ghajnsielem were the better side during the first period and Zebbug's goalkeeper Xuereb had a very busy afternoon to keep a clean sheet following attempts by Aloysius Ihbeulu, Dione Lautier and Belhaj.

Zebbug created their first dangerous attempt towards the end of the first half with a good effort by Silvan Galea that ended just wide.

After the change of ends, the blacks of Ghajnsielem upped the tempo and intensified the pressure on Zebbug's defence, going close to scoring through Lautier.

However, Ghajnsielem's hopes of breaking the deadlock were dealt a severe blow in the 61st minute when they were reduced to ten players, Ihbeulu being sent for an early shower following retaliation.

Zebbug took full advantage of the extra player on the field and three minutes later they scored what proved to be the decisive goal... a close-range shot by Galea following a corner action.

Ghajnsielem were confused in their reaction and failed to trouble their opponents' goal, while Zebbug could have made sure of the victory but an effort by Cardona hit the crossbar and a free-kick by Touali was stopped by the post.

Division Two: Gharb, Sannat promoted

Gharb Rangers and Sannat Lions secured promotion to the GFA's top division last weekend.

In their last outings, both Gharb and Sannat registered sound victories but the other team in contention, Kercem Ajax, were held by SK Victoria Wanderers and squandered their remote chance of Division One football next season.

The last match of the campaign for Gharb and Sannat is a direct clash for the division two title tomorrow afternoon at the Gozo Stadium.

SK Victoria Wanderers opened the scoring 28 minutes into their match against Kercem, thanks to a Daniel Muscat goal.

Kercem scored an early second-half equaliser, through Christian Sylvester but despite playing against 10 men, after Jason Camilleri was red-carded for Victoria, they could not breach the opponents' defence.

The Lions stormed to a handsome 5-0 victory over Oratory Youths to consolidate their runners-up position.

Sannat took a three-goal lead in the first half with goals from Sandro Azzopardi (20th), Mark Muscat (24th) and Pierre Said (26th). They added two further goals after the break through Abdul el Mutalib (71st pen. and 79th).

Leaders Gharb then beat SK Victoria Wanderers 5-1. The latter took the lead inside the first minute but the Rangers recovered well from this shock and scored five times without reply through Julian Bajada, Philip Bajada, John Cassar, Victor Caruana and Joe Bajada.

Two Gozo Youth FA championships came to a close this month. Xewkija T. were crowned U-12 champions while Nadur Y. claimed the honours in the U-16 category.
