Rafael Nadal has ruled himself out of the Paris-Bercy Masters this week because of tendinitis in his left arm.

The world no.1 from Spain had been due to make his much-anticipated comeback having not competed since October 14 when he was eliminated from the Shanghai Masters in the third round by Austria’s Jurgen Melzer.

“I am very unhappy to not be playing this year at the Paris-Bercy event,” said the five-time French Open winner, who has had less success on the other side of Paris, where his best result was reaching the final in 2007.

“Due to a small tendinitis on my left arm caused by forcing a bit too much on my practice this week back at home, I have to stay 6-7 days resting. It is nothing to be worried about, but the doctor told me that during those days I have to be doing intensive treatment and functional rehabilitation with physiotherapy.”

At Bercy, which runs until next Sunday, Nadal would have played his final tournament ahead of the London Masters between November 21 and 28.

The Spaniard has suffered intermittently from injury, mostly to his knee, but has enjoyed his most successful season to date this year winning seven tournaments including three Grand Slams – the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.
