A Parliamentary vote in favour of divorce would be the best way to guarantee democracy and a guarantee that the people's will is respected, the Moviment Zghazagh Partit Nazzjonalista said this morning.

It said in a statement that although the Nationalist Party was against divorce, the people's democratic will was clearly expressed in the referendum.

The movement, which is the youth section of the PN, said it will be moving a number of suggestions on policy updates to ensure that the PN's beliefs were interpreted in the best way in the new reality the country was in, without the party losing its identity.

It said the bill should be improved to become more family friendly and eliminate certain loopholes it could have.

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, who is the leader of the PN, has already said that the will of the electorate will be respected.

However, President Emeritus Eddie Fenech Adami, Dr Gonzi's predecessor, hoped that since this was a moral issue, Parliament would block the introduction of divorce.
