What caused Anthony Azzopardi, 68, to drown in a former Cospicua dock two weeks ago may remain a mystery because CCTV footage did not capture the moment he fell in the water.

Sources said court-appointed experts examined two CCTV cameras located within the ex-Dock 1 area – one of them aimed at the bridge underneath which Mr Azzopardi’s body was found – but the footage did not shed any light on the circumstances that led to his death.

So far, the police have not yet managed to track down anyone who could have witnessed what happened, the sources said.

Mr Azzopardi’s body was found floating, face down on May 8. At about noon, teenagers Christian Martin and Dynalee Vella spotted the corpse while walking along the promenade and alerted the police. Four officers followed them to the scene and two of them jumped into the water to retrieve Mr Azzopardi who, however, was already dead.

Police officers recognised Mr Azzopardi, from Ħamrun, because he was familiar to them from the days when he used to work as a parking attendant in the Valletta ditch known as the Yellow Garage.

An autopsy the following day concluded that the cause of death was drowning.

No signs of foul play or violence were found on the body.

Mr Azzopardi’s daughter, Joanne, launched a public appeal for information urging anyone who could have seen what happened to come forward.

She said her father could not swim and was afraid of the water.

She said the only items found on him were the house keys, a cigarette lighter and a tissue in his back pocket.

However, €300 he was carrying were missing.

She said she had last seen him the evening before, when he visited her house in Żabbar carrying the €300, which he had saved up to buy her a 42-inch TV set.

Yesterday, Ms Azzopardi said that, so far, no one had come forward with any information.

“All I was told is that in the morning, at about 7.30, he went to Jonny’s Bar, in Ħamrun. I still hope to find out what happened. My fear is that he may have been pushed.

“I am not interested in who did it; I just want to know what happened,” she said, adding she would respect people’s anonymity.

Anyone who has any information can contact her on 7703 2444.
