A trade dispute has been declared by the Malta Union of Teachers with the government because of increased demands on teachers without the necessary human support and adequate financial compensation.

In a statement, the MUT said it had been expressing concern about developments in the state education sector since the signing of the reform agreement in July, 2007.

It said it was seriously disappointed with the authorities’ interpretation and implementation of this agreement, which had been followed by another agreement with the health sector and which had included more attractive financial benefits.

Last February, the union was informed by the Education Ministry that discussions would commence to rectify matters but these had not yet materialised.

The union said that increased demands were being made on teaching grades affecting their work practices and conditions without the necessary human support as was contemplated in the agreement and bereft of adequate financial compensation.
