Zach Muscat’s Akragas fought back from two goals down to grab a crucial point in a 2-2 draw against Melfi in a Lega Pro Group C match last Saturday.

Muscat played the full match as the Agrigento-based club found themselves in serious trouble when relegation rivals Melfi took a two-goal lead inside the first 45 minutes.

But Akragas staged a stirring fightback after the restart, scoring two quickfire goals to take a point that secures their Lega Pro status for next season.

Akragas are three points clear of 14th-placed Catania, who hold the last relegation play-off spot, but the latter can’t overtake their Sicilian rivals who boast a better head-to-head record. Catania drew 0-0 with Paganese last weekend.

Akragas will complete their league commitments on Saturday when hosting section winners Benevento who have promoted to Serie B.

Rowen Muscat was an unused substitute as Pavia slumped to a 1-0 home defeat to promotion chasers Pordenone on Saturday. The result left Pavia in a mid-table position. They conclude their league schedule with a trip to FeralpiSalò on Sunday.

Andrè Schembri enjoyed a deserved rest following his midweek heroics as the Cypriot championship observed a break due to the country’s Easter festivities.

Last Wednesday, Schembri scored one of the goals that helped Omonia to a 2-0 win over Nea Salamis. Omonia remain on course to finish third in the standings.

Schembri came off the bench eight minutes into the second half to net his team’s second goal in stoppage time after Chris Sheridan had put Omonia ahead on 82 minutes.

The result enabled Omonia to leapfrog Apollon into third place and they now hold a two-point lead over their direct rivals with only two matches to play.

Also last Wednesday, Malta defender Steve Borg was not in the 18-man squad as Aris Limassol lost 1-0 to rivals AEL in the derby.

Malta U-21 international Sam Magri was also missing for Dover Athletic when they lost to Forest Green in their final English National League match on Saturday.

The result had no impact on Dover’s qualification to the play-offs as they now face the same Forest Green in the semi-finals which get under way with the opening leg at home tomorrow.
