Playmobil chief executive Matthias Fauser this morning expressed his concern that not enough young people were considering a career in the manufacturing sector.

He was speaking during a visit by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat at the Hal Far plant.

Mr Fauser said the government's pledge to reduce utility bills for industry by 25 per cent in 2015 would address a major concern for the company but noted that the take up of manufacturing oriented programmes was not as high as expected.

Taking the cue, Dr Muscat said this was also Government's concern insisting that manufacturing was an essential part of the economy.

"Manufacturing is the future just like financial services sector and gaming. There is a career in manufacturing," he said encouraging young people to take an interest.

He said a meeting is being held next week between the Education Minister and Playmobil officials to see how best to address concerns.

He commended the company for having an "exceptionally" good year and said it was not Government's role to take credit for success but rather to facilitate matters when problems crop up.
